Fellow Ode Gen 2 Review

Buy now

The original Fellow Ode generated enormous hype as a Kickstarter campaign in 2020, reaching its $200,000 goal in 90 minutes. The reality didn't quite match the promise — users complained the grind range was too narrow. Fellow listened, and the Gen 2 is a genuine reinvention. With new 64mm interlocking flat burrs and a wider grind range, it's now the grinder the original should have been.

Design & Build

The Ode is, simply put, gorgeous. The angular, minimalist steel body looks like nothing else on the market. It's compact enough to live permanently on your counter without dominating the space. The 100g single-dose hopper is a deliberate choice — no stale beans sitting in a large reservoir. The hopper lid has a printed grind guide for different brew methods, a small detail that shows Fellow's attention to the user experience.

The Burrs

The Gen 2's 64mm interlocking flat burrs are the star of the show. You typically only see burrs this size in commercial grinders. They produce incredibly uniform particle sizes with a two-stage grinding geometry and PID-controlled motor speed. The result is cup clarity that will make Chemex and V60 lovers weep with joy. 31 stepped grind settings cover everything from AeroPress to French Press. Fellow is transparent that this is not an espresso grinder — and that honesty is refreshing in an industry that often over-promises.

Daily Use

The Ode is whisper-quiet — the quietest electric grinder we've tested. The magnetic catch cup locks in with a satisfying click and the auto-stop feature alerts you when grinding is complete. There's a slight vibration on startup but nothing that moves the grinder on the counter. Anti-static technology is vastly improved over Gen 1, though the metal catch can still attract a spoon if you're scooping grounds out. Our recommendation: weigh your beans first, grind second.

Pros & Cons

1

Exceptional grind consistency

64mm flat burrs deliver commercial-grade uniformity. Pour-over clarity is in a league of its own at this price point.

2

Ultra-quiet operation

The quietest electric grinder we've tested. Grind at 5am without waking anyone.

3

Stunning design

The minimalist steel body is a genuine piece of industrial design. You'll want to leave it on your counter.

4

Not for espresso

Fellow is upfront about this — the Ode is for filter methods only. If you need espresso, look at the Opus or a dedicated espresso grinder.

5

Premium price

At ~$400, it's a significant investment. The Opus at $200 handles most tasks nearly as well.

Verdict

The Fellow Ode Gen 2 is the best filter coffee grinder you can buy for home use. If you're serious about pour-over and willing to invest, nothing in this price range touches it for grind consistency and cup clarity. It's the grinder the original Ode should have been, and Fellow deserves credit for listening to their community and delivering a genuine upgrade.
